Work-friendly Bars & Cafes in Wakefield and Leeds
I work from home a lot of the time, and occasionally feel the need to go and sit among other people and work instead. I tend
to drink coffee, tea, beer and grab the odd bite to eat. After finding a few problems with cafe owners (aka little Hitlers)
I figured I'd compile a list of who's laptop-friendly and who isn't, in the Wakefield and Leeds areas.
This doesn't include cybercafes, which by default are friendly to geeks.
Wakefield
-
Bar Latino, top of Westgate - reasonable beer, pretty much the usual Allied-Domecq range. Big plasma screen for great Wimbledon
justice in Summer. Does food apparently but it's under new ownership so I'm not sure. One wall has shitloads of power sockets on it
and the barman's fine with you using them as long as you're buying beer or coffee.
-
Pink Lizard, Bullring - geek friendly, nice atmosphere, very good food for not much. Serious lack of power outlets for
laptops, but as a pluspoint they are installing 802.11b (actually, not heard anything since the owner told me about it 4
weeks ago). Steak sarnies are nice and cheap.
Most definitely not work-friendly is Patio in the Ridings Centre. Owner not very hospitable to anyone who may upset
his regular fare of old grannies, even if you are giving him cash.
Leeds
-
Baby Jupiter, York Place - Good atmosphere, bit dodgy for mobile connectivity in the basement though. Sit by the Acid Eaters
poster for the best Orange connectivity. Good inexpensive menu, tolerant owner, using power for laptop isn't a problem but
there are only two available sockets, and they're round the back where mobile signal is a bit poor.
Pocklington
- Black Bull - good food, good beer. Also has an insecure wireless next door belonging to Pocklington Arts Centre.
